In the opening One-Day International against Sri Lanka on Tuesday (January 10), Guwahati scored a dominant 373 because to contributions from India's top order. Despite losing their opening pair, India made sure their run rate didn't drop thanks to players like Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, who showed drive and made significant contributions. Iyer appeared dangerous when he hit Wanindu Hasaranga for a six but was dismissed for 28 after a poorly timed sweep off Dhananjaya de Silva.
Rahul took some time to get going and was batting on 8 off of 12 when Wellalage's full toss allowed him to rediscover his rhythm. Both hitters hit sixes off of Dhananjaya, but Sri Lanka could have easily stopped the run-flow in the next over if Kusal Mendis had been able to hold onto a legal catch behind the wicket when Rajitha connected with Kohli's outside edge. Three other boundaries followed suit in the same over, adding insult to injury for Sri Lanka, who was forced to pay right away.
India had 294 on the board before the end of the 40th over, meaning that it was almost certain that it would reach the milestone 400 with the addition of Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel. Rahul's stay was cut short, though, as Rajitha's slower ball from the area of the wicket struck Hardik's leg stump and he was out for just 14.
Although Sri Lanka may have done more damage if Shanaka had held onto a catch at extra cover as Kohli was granted a second reprieve, those two wickets arrived at a crucial time. Before being dismissed for 113, he made it count by scoring three figures in back-to-back ODIs. India's long tail prevented them from scoring any boundaries in the final two overs that would have brought their total closer to 400, but they still believe they can take the lead after one.
