India stays in the game because to the Axar-Ashwin rearguard

The most exciting day of cricket in this series, comparable to recent Test matches between these teams, saw Australia cruise into the lead before having their advantage temporarily taken away by an outstanding Indian rearguard led by Axar Patel and only partially recovered by some late-evening batting endeavors. The visitors led by 62 at the end of the second day of the Delhi Test, which had been turned into a second-innings shootout thanks to pivotal performances from Nathan Lyon, Virat Kohli, Axar Patel, R. Ashwin, and Travis Head.

With a magnificent spell from Nathan Lyon in the morning that read 9-1-21-4, Australia will have cause to believe that they should have vanished from India's line of sight. At the beginning of the day's play, it wasn't clear if the visitors' 263 in their first innings would be enough, but the off-spinner quickly dispelled any worries by having India in trouble at 66/4 and taking each of the four wickets that fell.

Lyon's delivery from around the wicket put India's strategy for playing spin - using their bat and pad together - to the test. When KL Rahul stretched out to defend, the turn beat him, and he was hit in the pad. He was the first to go. Although he reviewed, the "umpire's call" on the hit sent him away. Lyon went on a rampage after breaking the opening stand of 46 runs.

The format The ball straightened beyond Rohit Sharma's outside edge and crashed into the stumps because he was outplayed by the length and the flight of the ball, keeping him anchored to his place. Following a duck in his 100th Test, Cheteshwar Pujara was taken out by Lyon. Similar to Rahul, Pujara made a close-range defensive play with his bat and pad, but was dismissed after a DRS review determined that the ball had struck the pad before the bat. In a previous Lyon over, Pujara had, incidentally, dodged a similar shout when Australia decided against a review. Then, Shreyas Iyer was caught by Peter Handscomb at short leg after a superb catch.

Australia's dubious reviewing was the one flaw in what was otherwise an outstanding session. They failed all three of their DRS reviews, but they still had enough of a chance to attack India since the pitch was still turning.

In this situation, Kohli created one of his little masterpieces. Only 44 runs were recorded in the scorebook, but it was a masterclass in handling this surface. His ability to play well in front and move deep into his crease when the ball was slightly shorter, trusting his eye to help him find the errant, wayward delivery, were the defining characteristics of his little gem.

India's innings was revived by Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, who also restarted the scoreboard. Kohli drilled a four past Todd Murphy with the help of his feet before slipping another ball past square leg for another four. But just as that duo looked to be cutting into that Aussie total, Murphy outfielded Jadeja with a ball that straightened to hit the batter's pads, forcing him to be outfielded.

In keeping with the pattern of this Test, Australia's first wicket, that of Kohli, who became debutant Matthew Kuhnemann's first Test wicket, was followed by two more for Australia. Kohli was adjudged LBW after stretching forward to defend with his bat and pad at the same time, just like Jadeja, Rahul, and Pujara had done before him. But the problematic part of his dismissal was that it was impossible to see from the replays whether the ball hit the bat or the pad first, thus the on-field verdict held. After that, Lyon forced KS Bharat to glove a sweep attempt in order to complete his 22nd five-fer. He also passed James Anderson and M. Muralitharan as the only players reach 100 wickets in Tests against India.

At that point, India was 124 off the mark and in danger of losing a sizable advantage and, ultimately, the Test match. Yet with a magnificent rearguard, Axar and Ashwin gave yet another illustration of India's depth and why it makes them such a threatening force in these circumstances. Naturally, the softer ball made it easier for them to bat against, but they were methodical in their approach and gradually but steadily started putting the pressure back on the visitors.

Kuhnemann, a left-arm spinner, was pursued by Patel, who eventually beat him for a six and two fours. In the 15 overs prior to the second new ball, Ashwin handled the off-spinners effectively, and the pair scored 59 runs together. Axar reached his second consecutive half-century along the way, and he stitched the series' first century stand with Ashwin. That meant India was only 11 runs behind when the second new ball became available.

All attempts by the hosts to gain a sizable advantage, however, were thwarted by Australia. Axar's adventurous game was put to an end at 74 when Matt Renshaw, filling in for a concussed David Warner, took a brilliant catch to dismiss Ashwin on 37. India ultimately fell short of Australia's total by one run.

Prior to the end of play, Australia stepped out to confront a tense 12-over session. And although India may have hoped to encounter an opposition playing out time, they instead encountered one that was in the mood to counterattack. In place of Warner, Travis Head was elevated to open, and he quickly sped to a quickfire 39 off 40 balls, smashing five fours and a six. Jadeja defeated Usman Khawaja, but Marnus Labuschagne continued the scoring pace with three of his own boundaries, setting up an electrifying Test conclusion.
