Shubman Gill completed 1000 runs for Gujarat Titans, becoming the first player to do so, and went above the 500-run mark for his career for the first time in IPL 2023.
The Narendra Modi Stadium is Shubman Gill's favorite place to play. Prior to the home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gill had hit four fifties in his 12 IPL 2023 games, all of which occurred in Ahmedabad. He attempted to reach the elusive triple-figure mark as well, but was only able to score 94 runs against the Lucknow Super Giants on May 7. On Monday, though, he finally succeeded in doing what had long eluded him in his IPL career.
Gill scored his first IPL century against SRH off 56 deliveries, setting a record for GT in the process.
After deciding to bowl first in Ahmedabad, SRH scored the game's first run when opener Wriddhiman Saha was bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a three-ball duck. However, GT swiftly overcame it as Gill smashed 36 off only 16 balls during the powerplay, including a string of four consecutive boundaries against Fazalhaq Farooqi.
Together, they stitched a 100-run partnership with Sai Sudharsan, who stood as an anchor until the midway point of the innings. Gill needed just 22 balls to reach it and notch his fourth fifty-plus knock of the year. In addition, he became the first player in IPL history to surpass 500 runs in 2023 after scoring 440 runs in 2020, 478 runs in 2021, and 483 runs in 2022. He was also the only player to ever reach 1000 runs for Gujarat Titans.
He finally reached his century in 56 balls, making him the sixth player in IPL 2023 to do so, joining players like Suryakumar Yadav, Venkatesh Iyer, Harry Brook, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Prabhsimran Singh, who have all reached their first ton in IPL history.
In addition to scoring a century, Gill amassed 400 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium, which is a record for a batter at any IPL 2023 location. The next best is Devon Conway, who at the Chepauk scored 350 runs in seven innings.
